Alprazolam Side Effects

In general, Alprazolam side effects may vary among patients considering the dosage taken including their body’s reaction to the medication taken.

Common Side Effects of Alprazolam:

  • allergic reactions such as hives
  • swelling of lips
  • swelling of face
  • swelling of tongue or throat
  • jaundice or yellowing of the skin and eyes

It is noted that if any of these symptoms should appear, a patient is supposed to seek medical attention immediately.

Drowsiness is a common side effect of Alprazolam.

Other side effects may include fatigue, lightheadedness or drowsiness, dizziness and an impaired coordination usually referred to as vertigo. Others even complain of respiratory depression and constipation. Some reportedly develop lack of restraint usually shown in several ways such as having poor risk evaluation and being too impulsive.

There are also reports of suicidal thoughts as a side effect. This makes a person formulate thoughts of suicide, but not necessarily acting upon them. A person will usually develop thoughts of suicide and making failed attempts of doing so.

Others may complain of the inability to urinate or lack of it. Others complain of having hallucinations and ataxia or having slurred speech. Some patients also report of developing Anterograde Amnesia. It is the inability of a person to create new memories after onset of this disorder. Often times this may lead a patient to have concentration problems. Others also complain about a change in libido or changing moods in terms of desire to have sexual pleasure. Often complaints of having a dry mouth and an increased appetite are also reported. Disorientation is also commonly known amongst patients, especially those who have been using this drug for a long term treatment.

There are also noted cases of patients developing paradoxical reaction to this drug. Paradoxical treatment pertains to a medication given to a patient, wherein this medication usually gives the patient a negative reaction. A very clear example would be if the patient is given medication for pain, instead of having relief from the medication, the patient experiences aggravated pain.

Some patients complain of twitches and tremors, hyperactivity and restlessness, mania, agitation, rage or hostility and aggression. Patients who report to having these kinds of paradoxical reaction to the drug must immediately seek medical attention.
